Regulations Are Coming!

You have been hearing it for a while, and now its official! Expected by Christmas time is the new regulations including the requirement to register your drone.

We have the scoop here to make sure you are ready for the changes so you can continue to enjoy your drone safely!

On Monday a task force of 25 aviation enthusiasts from Google, Amazon, Walmart, and drone manufacturers like DJI, and 3D Robotics published a regulations recommendation for drone registration processes. These regulations will require drones weighing more than 0.55lbs and less than 55lbs to be registered online.

The proposed system has been designed with simplicity in mind, as to not deter the people from the world of drones, after all with DJI and 3DR on the board the people effected by this are who pay their bills!

On paper it seems like the process will be very simple and straight forward. This process can be completed in the following 3 easy steps.

1. Fill out the electronic registration form through an app or online. The registrant must be at least 13 years of age or older and provide their name and street address.

2. Immediately receive an electronic certificate of registration and a personal Universal Registration Number. This one URN can be used on all UAS’s owned by that person.

3. Mark the registration number, or registered serial number, on all applicable UAS’s prior to their operation.

While the task forces recommendations are not official, they will carry a lot of weight with the FAA. The FAA plans to have a process in place before the holiday season when as many as 400,000 new drones are expected to be sold.

It is worth remembering that the FAA has failed to meet deadlines in the past for drone regulations. There is a very real possibility that these will not be in place in time for the Holidays but be aware they are coming.

The FAA states the main purpose of registering the drones is not just to hold people accountable, but also a chance to educate people on safe use of their new UAS’s. This is something that everyone can get behind I am sure.

What do you think of this registration recommendation?
Do you think the FAA will be able to meet their proposed deadlines?
Do you think the government is likely to attach a fee to this?
