Police in Britain testing drones for police applications

Police in Devon and Cornwall are testing two DJI drones for official police applications.

The two models picked up by the police (a DJI Inspire and a DJI Phantom 2+) are being tested by the police. The potential applications are limitless however the official reasons for testing are for use in hunting for missing people, gathering information about dangerous situations such as gun fights and responding to motor vehicle accidents.

These trials will last 6 months and the police are currently optimistic about the results. Leading the trails and representing the Alliance Operations department Andy Hamilton was quoted as saying “This technology offers a potentially highly cost effective approach to missing person searches, crime scene photography and responding to major road traffic collisions.”

At present both police forces involved in this trial have three trained pilots in each force. Both forces have plans to train more officers should the trial prove to be a success.
