Drones used to transport transplant organs

With all of the negative news about drones lately I wanted to look at a positive use.

Drones in Chennai’s Fortis Malar hospital have successfully transported life-saving organs.

Having done 54 heart transplants in the last 5 years the number has been on the rise. This represents a major challenge to the city as delivery of the organ brings traffic to a standstill. With experts expecting upwards of 1,000 plus heart transplants in the country five years from now this may not be a possible solution soon.

Because of the issue with transport the hospital has approached the Union health ministry as well as state and Central authorities. They are requesting permission to use drones as transport vehicles for organs.

The hospital has already conducted pilot studies successfully transporting fake human organs on drones. In some of these tests the destinations were more than 20 kilometers away. In one test they traveled successfully between Marina Beach and Mahabalipuram in Chennai.

This May prove to be a very good use for drones in the near future. The ability to expedite transfers like this has the ability to save millions of lives.

I hope you enjoy the little bit of good drone news.
