Drone Registration Program is Underway

The FAA’s new registration website has already had more than 45,000 registrations and now is preparing for the holiday rush.

On Tuesday December 22nd the FAA temporarily suspended online registration for drones until Thursday December 24th in order to prepare for the holiday rush. The FAA is expecting as as many as 400,000 registrations over the holiday season and the site needs to be load tested in order to ensure proper function.

All of this is in response to earlier this fall when the FAA announced that it will require amateurs and enthusiasts to register any UAV’s (drones) that weigh more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds. Included in the registration requirements are payloads such as camera and gimbal add-on’s. Existing owners will have until February 19th to register their UAV’s (drones). Anyone purchasing a UAV (drone) after February 19th will be required to register with the FAA before taking their first flight.

It is good for people to know that the fines can be quite strict and it is very advised to follow the registration requirements. Civil penalties for flying your UAV (drone) without registering it can go as high as $27,500 with criminal penalties reaching a maximum of $250,000 and three years in prison.

Please fly responsibly with your new toys this this holiday season and be safe!
