New FAA Rule Could Let Drones Fly Over Your head

A new proposed rule from the FAA could let drones fly over your head from as low as 20 feet.

If the new rule passes it will allow drones to fly 20 feet above a persons head with a 10-foot buffer space on all sides. The buffer is mostly for safety when landing and taking off. Today operators are restricted from flying drones over people not associated with the drone in some way. Removing the regulations is the first step in paving the way for commercial uses of drones.

A panel of industry experts composed of members from the drone industry, GoogleX, 3D Robotics, Intel, DJI, airlines and realtors representing the FAA made the recommendations for the new rule.

The next step of the proposal is a review by the FAA which will then be opened up for public comment. The next step will be for the FAA to propose official rules. Commercial drones are unrelated to this proposal and are under another set of rules governing small drones. The FAA will be working on this later in the summer.
