Now Drones Deliver Cookies Too!

Nothing soothes the home-sickness like a fresh package of cookies and that is exactly what the crew of the Maersk Edgar chemical tanker got.

Life at sea can be very demanding. You spend weeks on the sea, eating the same thing every night and communication to the land can be expensive. Ocean shipping mogul Maersk Group has a new high-tech solution to home sickness on the high seas. The challenge was to get a little bit of home to the tanker without bringing it into dock. The solution was getting a drone to deliver a box of cookies to the 610-foot chemical tanker off the Danish coast.

The cookies were a very welcome test of it’s ability to deliver cargo. Future plans include critical and potentially life saving supplies such as medicine and replacement parts that could save the ship from a detour to port. A drone with a video camera and GPS locator also has many other uses on-board a freight ship. These uses include performing dangerous tasks such as hull inspections or watching for potential pirates.

To make the delivery Maersk used an octo-copter drone with a 41-inch (104 centimeter) wingspan and top speed of 36 miles (58 kilometers) per hour from French company Xamen Technologies. The drone carries just 4.5 pounds for it’s payload however larger units can carry up to five times this weight. These units were not tested yet as they are not approved for operation in explosive environments such as tankers, yet. Check out the flight right from the Maersk sight below!.
